Senior using tablet

Silver surfers are taking their share of the tablet computer market and purchasing modern technologies. More seniors are using tablet computers and e-readers, according to consumer research firm Nielsen

Figures show that over-55s accounted for 19% of tablet ownership this summer, marking a rise of 9% from figures recorded last fall. The sharp rise indicates the interest that seniors have in touch screen technology and highlights that older users are enjoying the benefits of carrying out simple web searches on a fuss-free and slimline device.

Don Kellogg, director of telecom research & insights at Nielsen said: “Early adopters tend to be younger and male. As consumer technology products gain wider acceptance, more women and more older consumers join the mix.”

He added: “Tablets and e-readers are relatively easy to use. Couple that with light weight and the ability to increase the text size (not to be underestimated with older owners), and you have a very appealing product for older demographics.”

The most popular tablet computer is the Apple iPad, which was the first touch screen device to enter the new market of highly portable electronics. However, other manufacturers have launched a series of similar items, such as the Galaxy Samsung Tab, that share many of the same features.

Older users favor tablets because they offer a simple way to search the web and shop. However, e-readers, like the Amazon Kindle, are ideal for those who like to read and want to house their library in a single compact space.

The Nielsen study also found that the number of women who have bought e-readers is on the rise – currently women count for 61% of the market, a rise of 15% from quarter three of 2010.
